As any Baklava connoisseur would probably think at first sight of this box in the frozen section, “this can’t be very good”.
My standards for baklava are very high. even some of the renowned local gyro restaurants can’t live up to my standards.
I looked at it sitting there frozen in its box and turned my nose up and walked away. However, curiosity overwhelmed my sweet tooth and desire to find the perfect store-bought baklava. I returned to the frozen section once again. Staring up at me, was what looked like would have the potential to be an overly dried out frozen disappointment. Nonetheless, I grabbed the box and tossed it into my cart.
Upon arrival at home, I placed it in the refrigerator overnight to allow it to thaw. As dinner was finishing, I pulled it out of the refrigerator and let it sit on the counter for an hour. My curiosity peaked. Doubt overshadowed my expectations and my bar was low for the store-bought boxed baklava. After dinner, I unboxed what I thought would be a cardboard flavored sweetened saltine.
Boy was I ever wrong! I could see the sticky sweetness saturate the bottom of the pan. I pulled a piece out and put it on my plate. Still skeptical… as I took a bite some sweet rose honey dripped down my chin as my eyes rolled into the back of my head, I thought, could this possibly be one of the best store-bought baklava I have ever placed on my pallet? Yes, yes it was. It has the perfect elements of flaky and sweet juiciness with the nutty pistachio flavor imbuing my taste buds. Delicious. Do not walk past the frozen section without grabbing a box, you will not be disappointed.
