Ok for a box cake mix, but I expected more from Trader Joe’s.

Used the cupcake instructions for cupcakes and I overfilled them so I wouldn’t have to make an additional 2-4 cupcakes after baking a dozen. The cake mix is easy to put together, I would recommend substituting melted butter for the oil if possible for a better, richer flavor.

The mix creates a very thin, fun-fetti style batter that cooked up just fine in the oven. The frosting was easy to prepare but it was very bland, very sweet, and tastes exactly like its two ingredients: butter and powdered sugar.

If I were to purchase again, I would add some vanilla extract and some heavy cream to the frosting to make it more like a traditional buttercream, but this is an easy frosting to put together in a pinch. I would either heavily doctor or just skip the frosting all together and make a simple frosting at home with less emphasis on whipped butter and more emphasis on flavor.

I would say this cake is great if you only have a few hours to put together a whole frosted and sprinkled cake or cupcakes, BUT there are much better boxed cake offerings at TJ’s to choose from, like the classic vanilla or the seasonal lemon and blood orange.

Very buttery taste to the cake mix. The frosting was not very sweet and ended up very thick and hard to spread. I would add some vanilla next time and maybe sour cream.

  3. Jen

Delicious! So much better than regalar grocery store box mixes, but still just as easy to prepare! Great flavors and texture, and the sprinkles are adorable for spring and summer celebrations or birthdays.

I loved this cake I made cupcakes and the icing was thick & it was sweet complimented the cake very well. I give it 5 stars!
